Different Types Of Coils For Metal Detectors

Different Types Of Coils For Metal Detectors

There are many factors that will help you to have a successful treasure hunt, among them are: having a good metal detector and knowing how to use it, the necessary tools for the excavation, and of course, a good coil.

Types of coils and how they work

It is very different the treasure hunt we do when we are tracking gold nuggets from the one we do when we are in search of relics, which are usually in most cases objects of a larger size, and for this, there is a wide variety of coils.

Concentric or coplanar coils:

These are the best known and most popular. A great feature of this type of coil is that it has an internal winding and an external winding, hence it is known as "concentric". These coils will generate an electromagnetic field that will generate a more or less conical shape. Tending to the center and to the front the greater density of the force of the electromagnetic field.

A great advantage of these coils is that they are very sensitive and will work very well discriminating metal detectors, but you must have very precise movements in their handling. The disadvantage of these coils is that in highly mineralized soils they can become unstable.

Concentric elliptical coils

These elliptical coils are also concentric and thanks to their elliptical shape they will help to work better in some terrains as devices to detect buried gold. Its disadvantage is that due to its shape the pin-pointer will be more difficult to manipulate because the electromagnetic field will be more concentrated to one side.

Double D Coils

These coils are named after the form of a capital "D" on one side and a capital but inverted "D" on the other. A great feature of these coils is that they work very well in mineralized soils, almost 70% better than a concentric coil.

Their disadvantage is that these coils present a rather reduced electromagnetic field, the two are concentrated in the middle and give it the appearance of a blade, which means that at the time of searching you will have to make more movements and will hinder to locate well treasures that are close to a wall.

Double D Butterfly Coils

They're bigger and they're going to help you find objects deeper. This coil has a design that will allow you to get closer to the walls.

Monoloop coils

They have a single winding that will act as both emitter and receiver. Normally these coils are used in gold detectors that work by pulse and their size has to be according to our search.

There is a slight variant of these coils and they are the coaxial coils that are normally used in VLF detectors and are the three-dimensional linear analogs of the concentric coil.
